Indeed, that was overriding feeling from all those I asked from the crowd to the new bands to the most famous names in the business, each one of them held Donington as having a special place in their life.

For the up and coming bands, being on the same line up as some of their heroes and gracing stages with such history, marked a momentous moment. Whilst their father headlined the mainstage, they were pleased to be part of the event with Anthony noting "To be part of it is a big deal for a band like us because we are trying to espouse the tradition rock and roll ethos. Rock and roll isn't the preferred choice in America".

It may come as a surprise to many just what reverence is put on Donington by foreign musicians, most notably the Americans who admit there is nothing stateside which can even hold a candle to Download. Bob from Hellyeah even went as far as to say Donington was the pinnacle of their touring cycle. Later we caught up with another friend from across the pond, Jeremy from Five Finger Death Punch fresh from playing to 50, people "What do you put in the water around here?!

We love the crowd here". Homegrown talent was also much in evidence, and the ambition of one day playing Donington was a big inspiration for many of them. London post-hardcore group Devil Sold His Soul echoed the this feeling, "As fans of heavy music and as teenagers you were always aware that this is the place heavy music is played.

This is where you want to come and play". Slash, the most famous top hat wearer in music, probably said what many of us feel, rockstar and punter alike - "I have a special place for Donington in my heart.
